Easy design Tricks for Small Backyard Spaces

Not everyone has tons of room to work with when it comes to landscape design, and that’s okay!

• Add an Elevation Change to the Space 

An elevation change will break up the space and add depth to your outdoor area, making it feel larger than it is. Adding steps or platforms are a great way to make the small space feel like it has different “rooms”. Pro tip: If you change the materials as you change the levels as well, it increases the visual separation. 

• Light Up the Space 

Don’t be afraid to experiment with lighting in small spaces. Add hanging lights, solar lights, put lights in planters or around the perimeter of your space. Lighting can make or break the ambience of a space so decide what style you want to go with and experiment with what type of lighting helps you accomplish that. 

• Embrace the Intimate Space 

If you have a small space to work with, sometimes it’s best to embrace it. Make the space feel cozy with your furniture choices, add some pillows, an outdoor rug and maybe even some outdoor curtains to make it feel like you’re in your own private oasis. 

• Get All the Senses Involved 

 Make your outdoor space an all inclusive experience and get all the senses going. Add a small water feature to have a tranquil sound to the space to relax you, or add a small fire pit to add to the ambience and coziness of the space. There’s nothing like a nice subtle crackle of a fire when you’re sitting around with your family and friends. 

Don’t think that just because your space is limited that your options are limited as well.
